Monday, July 4:

R. writes letters; I find myself very unwell, constant feelings of nausea, which render me helpless. I struggle against it as best I can and give the children their lessons. Go for a drive in the afternoon. A summons for July 18 arrives from the town law courts. Newspapers of all sorts with stupidities about Die Walküre; the King truly did not attend either the dress rehearsal or the first two performances, and for that he spent 40,000 florins and offended R.’s feelings! R. thinks he did not go because in his letter to Esser R. had said the King had wanted the performance, and now it was his whim to present him with a denial. In the evening we begin Tieck’s Dichterleben.
