Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 29, 1870

Overview

Fidi is named Wagner’s good spirit, while unexpected Tannhäuser income from Pest brings practical pleasure. Munich reports claim great Walkuere success and suggest Berlin interest, but Wagner is sick with a cold and stays indoors playing Haydn duets with Richter. The music recalls Cosima’s youth with Blandine, blending present family closeness with memories of orphaned sadness.

Wednesday, June 29:

“My eudaemon,” R. calls Fidi. “You are my good spirit.”

Yesterday a money order arrived from Pest, Tannhäuser has brought in an unexpected 500 florins, which pleases R. greatly.

Today the outside world brings us only a letter from Herr Schner in Munich; according to him the success of Die Walküre is very great, and the manager of the Berlin Court theater is said to have applauded unceasingly and to have made notes on the casting in Berlin (!!). R. has a cold, does not go out, plays duets with Richter: Haydn symphonies—that reminds me of the time when I used to play these works with Blandine. Beau temps où j’étais si malheureuse, as Madame de Staël says, my sad, fatherless and motherless, and yet blissful youth! The children constantly around us.
