Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 20, 1870

Overview

Cosima’s melancholy dreams return to Hans and the question of whether she could have spared him suffering, only to be answered by Wagner’s own exhausted need. Theater plans involving Richter, Brussels, Paris, and Mendes swirl around without Wagner’s consent, while the Maderaner stay is abandoned as too costly. A boat excursion with the children and Wilhelm Meister offer beauty and richness against guilt and professional intrusion.

Monday, June 20:

Melancholy night with strange dreams, thought much of Hans, with inner consciousness of his distress. Could I have spared it him? As I ask myself this question, R. comes in, looking quite worn out, and then I once more feel that I could not have done other than I did—may my deep fellow suffering atone for my sin!

Letter from Richter, he is also going to Munich, in order to meet the manager of the Brussels theater, who wants to perform Lohengrin in Paris—all this without even asking R. I write to the guesthouse proprietor in the Maderaner valley; we are giving up the idea of a six-week stay there, since it would cost too much. Telegram from Catulle Mendès begging pardon, they will not go to Munich. Telegram from Richter, who is coming here next week to copy out the sketch of the first act for the King. Boat ride to St. Nikolaus with the children, Loldi is the first to espy R., who came overland to meet us; Eva returns home in the boat with Hermine, from the heights Loldi catches sight of the ship again and we call out to one another.

In the evening W. Meister, with ever-increasing admiration for the unending richness of its inspiration.
