Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 26, 1870

Overview

Newspaper reports transform Cosima’s hired birthday serenade into an public ovation, amusing Wagner as an example of how history falsifies events. A woodland outing with the children lets Loulou show spontaneous charity toward an old woman. Merry Wives, a visit from young Count Bassenheim, and a letter to Judith round out a lighter Ascension Day.

Thursday, May 26:

Ascension Day. The newspapers write of an “ovation” given to R. by the military band; this amuses R. “Thus is history made,” he says. “It would never occur to anybody that you engaged these people. There was not the slightest intention of giving me an ovation, but I am afraid that most of the ovations of which one hears are like that.”

In the afternoon in the woods with the children, Loulou pleases me; in fun we had given her 50 centimes, an old lady approached and of her own accord she asked me to allow her to give the money to the woman.

In the evening Shakespeare’s Merry Wives. (Visit of the young Count B.; we write to Judith.)
