Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 24, 1870

Overview

Wagner writes birthday replies and reflects on the generations of followers around him, contrasting an earlier worthless second generation with a more serious younger one. Cosima teaches, receives Agatha Aufdermauer, and pursues the jeweler’s report about Semper. Philoctetes and a letter to Frau Schure close a day that moves between business, visitors, aesthetic judgment, and Wagner’s aphorism on Wallenstein.

Tuesday, May 24:

R. writes letters (business and otherwise); Herr Weissheimer continues his shameless conduct toward R. Frl. von Meysenbug also sends birthday congratulations. R. sinks into meditation about the second generation, which was attracted to him but which was worthless, whereas the third, now 25 years old, appears through its earnestness and concentration to grasp R.’s ideas. I work with the children; in the afternoon visit of Agatha Aufdermauer from Brunnen, our Tribschen enchants her. Then to the jeweler, who has been to see Semper; the latter received him at first hostilely, but then gradually gave some explanations. In the evening Philoctetes. I write to Frau Schurd and quote to her R.’s saying about Wallenstein: “Born under Saturn and flirting with Jupiter, who does not repay his trust.”
