Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 30, 1882

Overview

A dream of Hans dead, subdued children, and fresh embarrassment over Humperdinck lend the whole day a low, chastened tone. Venice is still there, but family strain has taken center stage again.

Saturday, December 30:

R. had a melancholy night, he dreamed a lot aloud, and he tells me he dreamed that Hans was dead! He finishes his article, and we meet in the Piazzetta after I have held another little rehearsal. At lunch there is upset over switching the places at table, I myself am much exhausted and upset by my talk with Lusch; the restriction of our accommodations due to my father’s move also irritates R., who needs a lot of space.

In the afternoon R. and I walk to the Piazza, where we meet Fidi, Hausburg, Humperdinck, which is very embarrassing to R. because the appointment has fallen through. In the evening the children are very subdued, since I had to speak to them severely about their all-too-independent behavior, and I also must take Lusch in hand again! (After the rehearsal today Moretto’s picture made a very strong impression on me, and I tell R. about it.)
