Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 5, 1882

Overview

Dull weather sends R. dreaming of Spain and taking refuge in Tolstoy, Jewish anecdotes, and Siegfried's own dramas rather than in action. Life with Liszt has become easier, and the whole day rests on that quietly improved harmony.

Content

Tuesday, December 5:

R. did not have a very good night, and the dull weather oppresses him. He thinks of leaving here, speaks of Spain. He does not go out today, but reads Tolstoy’s novel with interest.

Our life with my father is becoming easier, and this evening our game of whist, for example, was a very merry one. R. tells Jewish anecdotes, and when he makes several plays on words, my father says the lagoons are adding to his wit. [A sentence dealing with a point of German spelling omitted.] Siegfried’s Hermann der Befreier puts him in good spirits.
