Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 1, 1882

Overview

The month turns with weather, missing proof pages, and animated talk with Volkoff, while R. keeps his mood surprisingly light despite interruptions. Even Gambetta becomes a figure to strike down in passing conversation.

Content

Friday, December 1:

R. slept well; we talk about all sorts of things at breakfast, and R. is in a good mood. Unfortunately the missing pages in the proofs sent to him cause him great vexation, he sends friend Wolzogen a telegram. The day passes peacefully, despite the bad weather; in the afternoon we go out in the gondola. R. drops me at the Palazzo Malipiero and then goes on to Saint Mark's Square with the children.

In the evening games of whist alternate with talking to Herr von Volkoff. At the end of the evening, when the latter praises Gambetta, R. becomes very animated and declares G. to be a clown.
