Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 3, 1882

Overview

Fine weather and a sunlit walk begin well, but a spasm, a tedious horror play, and the impropriety of a servant quickly sour the day. R.'s appetite for entertainment proves as exacting as ever: eagerness alone is never enough if the thing itself is false or dull.

Friday, November 3:

A good night, good work, very fine weather! We ride to the Riva, R. and I, and go for a walk in the sun, in good spirits. Even the fact that he does not care for his new barber, chosen for reasons of economy, makes us laugh. At lunch we discuss all sorts of things with the children, including the different forms of burial. Unfortunately he is beset by a spasm in the afternoon. He stays at home. But in the evening, for Siegfr.’s sake, we go to the Malibran Theater; a horror play, Giani Fupo, finally proves very boring, although R. entered the theater in high spirits and looked forward eagerly to being entertained. On our return home, the impropriety of the manservant puts the finishing touches to our feelings of revulsion!
