Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of October 21, 1882

Overview

A canary, Saint Rocco, Meistersinger memories, and concern over Daniela show R. in a more balanced state, able to enjoy both art and family. Even a spasm and renewed anxiety about Voltz and Batz cannot entirely spoil the good spirits of the day.

Saturday, October 21:

R. had a good night’s rest. At breakfast he is delighted by a canary across from us: “What a sound that is from such a tiny body, the little fellow is nothing but sound!” Then we talk again about W. Scott, but he ends up being annoyed since no news has come from Voltz and Batz, and he gets me to send off a telegram.

Around midday he suggests a visit to S. Rocco; we go there and spend a long time looking at the Crucifixion and also Christ before Pilate. From there we go to the Rialto and then ride home in good spirits. But as we are going in to lunch, R. begs to be excused; he comes to the table only later, after getting over his spasm! We meet again in St. M.’s Square around 6:30, he had gone there earlier with the children, and we then ride home.

In the evening we have music from Die Meistersinger, R. takes great delight in it, also in memories of the first performance (1868). Daniela’s behavior causes us some concern, but R. feels that, if she were to find the right husband, everything inside her would be smoothed out, as in Blandine’s case.
