Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 21, 1882

Overview

Thunder, mosquitoes, paperhangers, and endless reports keep R. from peace, though he still sings jokingly of the King and Christel and enjoys a leisurely walk on the Riva. Good letters and fresh performances elsewhere should reassure him, but his temperament insists on finding something to worry over.

Thursday, September 21:

Despite a bad night I hear R. singing to me in the morning, “Long may the King live, my Christel, and I: the King for all people, but Christel for me!” Our night was disturbed by thunderstorms and mosquitoes. In the house a little 70-year-old paperhanger is working with quiet, but frantic, zeal. The weather is fine, a telegram from Herr Neumann reports further successes. R. drinks some champagne, feels unwell in consequence. We ride to the Riva, where we take a leisurely walk, he recalling his visit to K. Ritter! Back home he is annoyed by reports in Herr Lessmann’s journal. I write to Frau Lucca on his behalf. In the evening letters arrive from friend Glasenapp and Herr von Biirkel, both very good, but R. finds something to worry about in everything!
