Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 15, 1882

Overview

The route south is filled with practical concern for Siegfried's health and affectionate absurdity, especially the comic vision of the pale, wrapped-up boy as a great bandit in Verona. Travel fatigue and parental anxiety remain stronger than any sense of adventure.

Friday, September 15:

At 8 in the morning we are in Munich; the station inspector, who traveled to Bayreuth 4 times to see Parsifal, offers us breakfast. Siegfried is worrying us; he is very pale, and since he complains of a headache, I make some cold compresses for him. In Bolzano we are greeted in pouring rain by our dear and honored friends the Schleinitzes. At 11 in the evening we are in Verona, where we encounter some difficulties. Since I am much afraid that Siegfried has a chill, I wrap him up in a long black fur, and he mounts the steps ahead of us, slow, pale, with a large round hat. R. exclaims, “Abellino, the great bandit!”
