Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 11, 1882

Overview

Despite the disturbance caused by too much Karlsbad salts, R. spends the day signing photographs and taking increasing pleasure in the remembered consistency of the artists. The evening's reading of Fuente Ovejuna confirms that after festival turmoil, literature can again enchant without resistance.

Monday, September 11:

R. slept well, but too strong a dose of Karlsbad salts disturbs the tranquillity of his day. He writes to Herr Neumann, whose telegram has pleased him. Otherwise he is kept busy signing the many photographs he is sending to his artists. His delight in his artists grows ever greater in recollection, and thoughts of the consistency of the performances have a very beneficial effect on him.

In the afternoon he recalled his relationship with the Wesendoncks and remarked on Herr W.’s constant readiness to help him. In the evening, at my request, he reads to us [Lope de Vega’s] Fuente Ovejuna, which enchants us.
