Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 27, 1882

Overview

R.'s bad mood continues into another sleepless night, while the Crown Prince's presence at the evening performance and Count Schleinitz's attack in the box deepen the sense of strain. The festival goes on, but surrounded now by illness, frayed nerves, and imagined slights among the singers.

Content

Sunday, August 27:

R. had a restless night, and his ill-humor persists. He sends a telegram to Herr v. Bürkel, expressing his concern at having received no word from the King. In the evening we have a performance in the presence of the German Crown Prince. For me it is greatly overshadowed by the illness of Count Schleinitz, who has to suffer a severe attack of his illness in the box! In the course of the day we heard that the singer M. Brandt was in a high state of emotional agitation about some imagined disparagement! R. invites orchestra and singers for tomorrow.
