Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 18, 1882

Overview

Reading the Oupnekhat leads R. to contrast Indian thought with Christianity, which he values for its simplicity and artistic fertility. At the theater he sits through the performance correcting tempi with Levi, more intent on orchestral sensitivity than on any public success.

Friday, August 18:

In the morning, since I am now reading the Oupnekhat, R. enlarges upon the difference between Christianity and Indian wisdom, stressing his preference for the former on account of its simplicity, and above all its ability to inspire art. After a late breakfast with the children we drive to the theater, and R. is pleased with the success of yesterday’s rehearsal. Herr Levi sits with us throughout the performance, during which R. has much to say to him about incorrect tempi, and in particular the insensitive playing of the orchestra.
