Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 15, 1882

Overview

Still unwell, R. returns to the theater only long enough to rejoice that Reichmann has profited from his corrections, rewarding him on the spot. By night, simple conversation over beer feels like a hard-won peace after another agitated day.

Content

Tuesday, August 15:

He is still not feeling well, and he has some soup in the salon while I lunch with the children. He and I then drive to the theater with Loldi, and R. is so pleased with the success of his exhortations to Herr Reichmann (1st scene, Habt Dank, etc.) that he goes to him and gives him a 10-mark piece. At supper R. sits down with the children, but he is very agitated. My mood becomes more fervent as a result, and in my helplessness I call on the God who reveals Himself to the humble. And not in vain! The evening hours after the performance are spent in peaceful chat over a glass of beer.
