Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 12, 1882

Overview

Fine weather, sympathetic guests, a successful reconciliation with Liechtenstein, and an outing to the Riedelsberg bring one of the month's lighter days. Yet even here R. retreats from family and finds French tiring, needing friendly company only on his own terms.

Saturday, August 12:

Another restless night, but fine weather. Countess Tasca, Frl. Malten, and Herr Gudehus lunch with us; R. is pleased to be able to show the Countess our house. He spent the morning in the summerhouse and avoided seeing even his family (Fritz Brockhaus along with his sister). At 4 o’clock the Liechtensteins paid their farewell call; he had been offended by R., R. learned about it and, in an attempt to reconcile him, exerted all the power he has over other people, making it seem ridiculous for anyone to take offense at anything he does. But the Princess-medium gazes wildly and fixedly at R., as if uneasily aware of his ability to see through things. Toward 5 o’clock we drive out to the Riedelsberg, to which the Grosses have invited several of the artists; we pick up the Glasenapps in the Rennweg and spend some time there very enjoyably. In the evening Malwida and Stein, while Biagino amuses himself with the children, since R. finds French very trying.
