Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of August 10, 1882

Overview

Both pain and toothache afflict the household, leaving R. mostly bedridden with Hoffmann and Cosima reluctant to entertain at all. The evening stays short, subdued, and drained of any festive energy.

Content

Thursday, August 10:

R. had a wretched night, and our poor bride spends it with a toothache. After lunch, which he has with us, R. goes to bed and reads Hoffmann’s “Mademoiselle de Scudéry” with much enjoyment. I receive guests in the evening somewhat reluctantly; the company leaves early.
