Saturday, July 29:
R. slept profoundly, if restlessly. At lunch we have the singers (Materna, Winkelmann, Scaria), to whom R. imparts some rules of enunciation, for example, not to say FLUCH when the sein is hardly heard, but SEIN FLUCH, and much else besides. At 3 o’clock we have a rehearsal in the theater with Frl. Malten and Herr Jäger; the former makes a surprisingly good impression on R. He is very tired in the evening. Today I had to deal consolingly with the complaints of our restaurant manager, who wants to give up on account of the lack of customers, and also to receive some gentlemen from the Wagner Societies, who appear to be not entirely in agreement with R.’s latest regulations.
