Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 27, 1882

Overview

The next morning is consumed by the same unresolved question: how to let the audience show gratitude without breaking the work's effect or wounding the artists. Family lunch brings some merriment, but the evening reception only confirms how public the private house has become.

Thursday, July 27:

The subject of our first conversation is once again the audience, and how to deal with it in such a way that the artists are not put out of humor by the absence of applause. We have a very merry lunch with the children, who amuse R. greatly with all they have seen. In the evening a reception at Wahnfried - Herr Schnappauf thinks 300 people, I think 200. (R. reads Hume’s History of England in the French translation.)
