Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 25, 1882

Overview

A fine morning, Liszt at lunch, private coaching for Reichmann and Winkelmann, and a public dinner combine to make this one of the more ceremonial days of the festival. R.'s speech in praise of Liszt reveals again how central that bond remains to him amid all the surrounding turmoil.

Tuesday, July 25:

R. slept well, and since the weather is fine, we have breakfast in the turret. Suddenly we hear a noise, and, like a voice from the grave, R. hears Frau Heim from Zurich, whom I am greeting down below. We have lunch with my father and Herr Levi, with whom R. once more goes through the tempi. Before lunch R. called on our patron Count Schleinitz, whose appearance I had remarked on when I returned from my early visit. Judith visits us after lunch. I receive her in my room, since R. is rather tired. He reads Die Serapionsbrüder in the garden, and at 5 o’clock he holds another rehearsal with Herr Reichmann and Herr Winkelmann, reading to them the salient features of their roles. At 7 o’clock we drive up to the restaurant, where, among other things, R. greets his artists; then the mayor proposes a toast to my father, whereupon R. gets to his feet and makes a wonderful speech about my father’s value and significance to him. (R. greets M. Maier with much delight in the restaurant.)
