Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 13, 1882

Overview

Batz's accounting and another orchestral rehearsal drain R.'s patience and energy, though Materna and the road home through the Eremitage offer some relief. The evening turns quietly domestic until bad news about Molly begins to darken the house.

Content

Thursday, July 13:

R. slept well but is very agitated. A letter from Herr Batz (statement of accounts) vexes him greatly. At lunch we have three of the Flowers (soloists). At 5 o'clock orchestra rehearsal with Herr Winkelmann and Frau Materna, the latter very good. But R. is very, very tired, since he has constantly to show them everything.

Because the weather is fine, we drive home via the Eremitage road. We are alone at supper; the children tell us that our dear good dog Molly is ill. The veterinary surgeon is sent for and says it is just a slight chill. Some time ago, since her face was looking much changed, I asked Dr. Landgraf, and he told me that she was quite well but was eating too much and must get a lot of exercise.
