Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 5, 1882

Overview

Though he fears he has caught cold, R. pushes through orchestral and scenic work on the first act and takes strength from the orchestra's spontaneous applause after the transformation. He ends the day agitated but inwardly confirmed that the act is not merely working, but moving people.

Content

Wednesday, July 5:

He had a good night's rest, but he feels he has caught cold. We go to an orchestra rehearsal with singers, still the 1st act. The need to raise his voice tires him, but it all goes well. At lunch we recapitulate all our impressions, Herr Scaria quite outstanding as Gurnemanz. R. is pleased that his first act is not boring! In the afternoon another scenery rehearsal with piano accompaniment, the orchestra is permitted to look on, and breaks into hearty applause after the transformation scene, which does R. good, though he has many difficulties to contend with: the bells are not right, and our good ballet master is not much help! Much agitation in the evening, but no real indisposition, thank goodness!

(M. Brandt very expressive as Kundry today.)
