Saturday, July 1:

We continue talking about this subject, and R., who finishes Prinzessin Brambilla in the course of the day, speaks regretfully of its amateurishness.

The execution of the President's assassin brought him back yesterday to his idea of monasteries and the efforts of their inmates to bring the sinner to the point of wishing to atone by death.

A letter from Countess La Tour brings the fate of our friend Gob. very close to us! Today there was to have been a gathering of orchestra and chorus in the little restaurant, but the weather prevents it. We drive up to the theater to arrange it all for tomorrow. Reunion with Hill (Klingsor) at the moment of driving off, later Gudehus (Parsifal), in between Heckel at Gross's. In the theater the conductor arranging the desks, otherwise empty. In the evening Hill and Gudehus. In between (for me) poor Frau Jager, on the verge of despair! Over coffee R. speaks in high praise of Jouk.'s sketches, and he is in favor of displaying them in the hall. "You are a remarkable man," he tells him, "but I cannot stand injustice" (a reference to the Bruckner brothers).
