Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 25, 1882

Overview

The following day collapses under the weight of a severe spasm and a tortured mood that no company can relieve. Even friendly presences become unbearable, and only the mayor's assurance that Batz and Voltz will be kept away offers any practical comfort.

Sunday, June 25:

On the next day that wish was not granted! Whether it was the Strauss matter which affected him, or perhaps Voltz. [this name altered in an unknown handwriting to "Batz"], or even indeed the discussion in the morning about Jouk.’s disordered circumstances, who could say? He is overcome by a very severe spasm and remains in a tortured mood all day long. Since the children are away on an outing with Gross, the presence of our three friends is a torture to him, and, in spite of a few cheerful moments, he is deeply upset. An interview I had this morning with the mayor has given me the assurance that for the time being R. will not be bothered with Batz-Voltz matters.
