Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 12, 1882

Overview

R. works on practical letters while Bayreuth's ceremonial burdens loom larger, especially the awkward question of receiving foreign princes without royal support. The theater's delays, Lusch's troubles, and the season's social obligations make the whole enterprise feel politically cluttered and emotionally costly.

Monday, June 12:

R. works on his letter to Schön, I have the same difficulties with the Catholic parson as with the Protestant one! A letter from Lusch in Nuremberg deeply affects me, but the girl is conducting herself well. We drive up to the theater, where R. unfortunately gets very annoyed, since work on the King’s box is making hardly any progress. In the evening we are faced with the problem of how to receive the Grand Duke of Schwerin, and it is indeed a difficult problem, since it seems the King will this time be offering no hospitality, and indeed the King is making the need to receive foreign princes his excuse for not coming at all.
