Sunday, May 28:
A lovely morning; we have breakfast in the turret. Before that R. admired with Siegfried the many different colors of the pansies, and he tells me that, when he pointed out to the boy that they have completely human faces, the latter replied, “Yes, there is Prince Ramacca.” I write a letter to Herr Schön according to R.’s instructions, and he signs it.
In the afternoon we visit the black swans. R. and I feed them and are delighted by their tameness and their beauty, also their pleasure in one another, which they demonstrate to us literally by intertwining their necks. In the evening R. plays to us the first two movements of the C Minor Symphony and the love scene from Lohengrin; he plays them wonderfully, though he himself is not satisfied, but Beethoven’s genius is brought very close to us.
