Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 24, 1882

Overview

Cosima's practical labors and theater visits are rewarded by real pleasure in the Grail scenery and the boys' singing, but technical faults and coach confusion soon undo the calm. Lulu's departure weighs on R. most heavily, leaving the evening hard to rescue.

Wednesday, May 24:

I am up very early in order to perform my various tasks. Els’chen works with me, pleasing me with her quiet industry. R. is content with my West-Eastern Divan. In the afternoon we drive up to the theater, where the scenery for the Temple of the Grail and the singing of the boys give us great delight. Unfortunately, however, the tom-toms (bells) have not been tuned, and since there is a misunderstanding with the coachman on the return journey (the Count and I are driven home, the others to the Eremitage), R. is put into an ill humor, which Pepino, requested to sing in the evening, aggravates rather than diverts. But the principal reason is probably Lulu’s departure; R. says goodbye to her.
