Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 18, 1882

Overview

Cosima remembers the day chiefly through its emotional high points: R.'s deeply moving performance from Tannhäuser, his wish to direct the Patrons' Society toward the poor, and fresh London news. The rest is rehearsal pressure, Batz trouble, and the arrival of more Bayreuth figures.

Content

Thursday, May 18:

The details of Ascension Day I have forgotten, remember only a very moving performance by R. of the 3rd act of Tannhäuser, then his decision to use the Society of Patrons for the purpose of collecting funds for the poor. Then some more Batz trouble. Also news of London from Cyriax, very positive, very favorable to Richter. Finally, the arrival of the “parson” (Else Ritter), greeted by R. with much joking. We are still without our Eduard, since Herr Jäger has been delayed in Stuttgart.
