Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of May 13, 1882

Overview

Materna's conditions for singing Kundry and the long-delayed completion of R.'s royal letter keep practical matters in the foreground. Yet much of the day passes peacefully in the garden and in Carlyle, with R. playful enough to cast Cosima as Circe descending among companions.

Content

Saturday, May 13:

Frau Materna writes that she would like to sing Kundry a few times at the beginning, then alternate with others. R. writes to the King (it is only today that he finishes his letter). In the evening he reads in Carlyle (Frederick the Great) the passage about Protestantism and Catholicism. We do not go for a drive today, spending much time in the garden; as I come down the steps from the salon to join him and our friends he says, “Circe approaching Odysseus and his companions!”
