Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 19, 1882

Overview

Packing, farewells, and last evaluations of Count Gravina fill the final day at Porrazzi, a place R. can no longer bear. The departure is turbulent but decisive, and the night's rail journey feels like an escape as much as a transition.

Sunday, March 19:

R. had a restless night and is very tired. For me a day of packing and shopping, also a conversation with Count Gravina, about whom R. says he should come to Acireale, so that we can get to know him better. The reports of him are good, and his behavior was excellent.

Around 7 in the evening we go to bed, at 1 o’clock we are up again, and toward 3 o’clock, amid much turmoil, we leave Porrazzi, which R. could no longer stand. At the station the prefect, Count Tasca, Gravina, Guccia, Rubinstein. Friendly farewells and then sleep till sunrise.
