Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 16, 1882

Overview

R. finishes and sends off the revised piano score, a real accomplishment in the middle of continuing domestic strain. The pleasant air and solitary walk help somewhat, but political injustice, social calls, and sheer exhaustion soon force him back into irritation and retreat.

Content

Thursday, February 16:

R. finishes the revision of the piano score and sends it off, complete with title page. Newspaper reports of the way Herr Ragusa took advantage of us cause us some amusement, though he himself is very angry about them. The air is lovely, R. feels its beneficial effect as we stroll in the garden.

In the afternoon he walks to Camastra by himself, returning home rather tired. In the evening he tells us about the soldier who shot some children dead; he is furious about his acquittal and the state of war here. “Orders!” he exclaims.

Then he loses his temper over the way women dress nowadays and their luxury, and, when Count Tasca and the Prince visit us, he feels so worn out that he withdraws.
