Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 17, 1882

Overview

Thoughts of Spain and future travel accompany a day of sittings, light jokes, and a rough but beautiful drive to the sea. The atmosphere stays outwardly easy, with letters handled and whist in the evening, even if larger decisions remain unresolved.

Tuesday, January 17:

The air feels fresh, R. thinks of Spain, and I write to Marsillach in order to be prepared for possible travel plans. R. has a joint sitting with Jouk. and with Rub.; he asks the former how he wants to do him, profile or full face - Lucretia or Lucia.

At lunch he tells us that the Tagblatt contains a report that a tree frog has been found at Wahnfried. He drives to the club with Count Tasca and Jouk., but when there is talk of venturing farther, he wants me with him, which brings from Count Tasca a joke about the “turtle doves.”

We drive to the sea, which is rough but still lovely, even when the sky is overcast. He then writes to Feustel, and in the evening we play whist.
