Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 11, 1882

Overview

R. begins in playful spirits, joking about church bells and rhinoceroses, but the day is repeatedly soured by weather, fading sunlight, and social irritations. Even so, evening stories and ghostly amusements briefly restore the household's good humor while Fidi remains unwell.

Content

Wednesday, January 11:

When he hears a church bell in the morning, R. says, “The good Lord is sounding his repeater watch,” and he gaily asks me if I know the female name for a rhinoceros, “RhinoceRosine, or Rosine Rhinoc.” He works, and in the afternoon we drive to the Favorita; R. is vexed by the disappearance of the sun, and feels the dear Lord has it in for him: in the morning he is unable to escape the sun, and in the afternoon it uses the clouds as a handkerchief.

In the evening, more about C. W[ittgenstein], then about theatrical people and the difficulty of getting along with them. In the evening Die Berlocken and the ghost story cause us much amusement; then R. tells a very drastic anecdote, for men’s ears only, and it is very characteristic of R. that he is not pleased by our friends’ first seeing its funny side. (Fidi is unwell.)
