Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of February 1, 1883

Overview

A restless night with earache opens February, with Wagner unable to eat supper and complaining of a heavy, oppressive feeling that bad weather and a futile short outing do nothing to dispel. As the evening progresses, however, his mood gradually lifts. The arrival of a letter from their daughter Blandine brings genuine solace, and Cosima is moved to reflect that she has been granted the gift of seeing this child following the paths she had hoped to lay out for her.

Content

Thursday, February 1:

A restless night for R., at any rate much talking aloud during it. He also complains of earache, and I put a few drops of tepid milk in his ear. We have both sirocco and rain, but all the same I suggest a short outing. It does not cheer R. up, however, and in the evening he eats no supper, complaining a lot about his heaviness. But he becomes more cheerful as the evening goes on and also feels somewhat better.

A letter from Boni is a real balm to us; so I have really been granted the boon of seeing this child pursuing the paths to which I directed her!
