Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of January 12, 1883

Overview

Wagner suffers severe spasms throughout the morning, lasting more than two hours, and is unable to eat anything all day. The arrival of Dr. Keppler at five o'clock brings a new treatment—massage—along with a promise of improvement within a month, which cheers Wagner considerably though Cosima harbors quieter doubts. That evening, the household discusses the impending departure of their friend Joukowsky to attend his father's centennial celebrations, persuading him with reluctance to make the journey.

Friday, January 12:

R.'s spasms start today first thing in the morning and last for more than two hours! He does not eat with us — in fact not at all. Dr. Keppler comes at last at 5 o'clock and proposes massage, which he begins at once, promising R. alleviation within a month! R. is greatly encouraged by this, whereas I, alas! He tells me that when I go to see him he has to ask me to leave, yet when I am gone he is sorry that I am not there!

In the evening whist is played, but there is also a discussion about our friend Jouk.'s impending departure to attend the centennial celebrations for his father. We persuade him — though sorrowfully — to undertake the journey.
