Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 12, 1870

Overview

Work, embroidery, children’s play, and a beautiful dairy walk make the Alpine setting feel indispensable to Cosima. Horawitz reports that forged or misleading Berlin correspondence about Die Meistersinger is being circulated with relish in Vienna. Wagner takes satisfaction in Bismarck’s firm response to the Vatican Council, while Porges’s departure closes the immediate episode of Munich anxiety.

Content

Tuesday, April 12:

R. works, I embroider, the children play. In the afternoon a walk to the dairy, there drank milk, lovely weather; I believe we shall never be able to live without the Alps. Letter from Herr Horawitz, who says that mendacious autograph copies of a correspondence have been sent from Berlin to all Viennese newspapers and received there with crows of delight (regarding the performance of Die Meistersinger). R. was pleased with Bismarck, who simply ordered his envoy to leave Rome and declared that he would not allow the Prussian bishops to return to their sees if the clause concerning Protestantism were permitted to stand.

Departure of H. Porges.
