Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of December 26, 1881

Overview

Gray weather and small practical vexations were softened by one piece of comic news: Lohengrin had been banned in Paris, a fact Richard found both amusing and flattering. He worked, visited the Palazzo Gangi, and later played whist while the children attended a gift distribution there. Their delayed return unsettled him more than he expected, showing how deeply he wanted to end the day in immediate family warmth.

Monday, December 26:

Gray skies still, which upsets R. for our friend’s sake. Today’s joke is the news that Lohengrin has been banned in Paris, which in fact delights us. R. says with a laugh that it makes him look very important. R. works; I send the sheets from my score to Rub. and, besides that, write letters.

We visit the Palazzo Gangi, and in the evening the children go there for the distribution of presents, which, after our very merry game of whist, causes a kind of upset in R., since he would have liked to see the children before going to bed, and they arrive home just at a moment when he cannot talk to them.
