Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 15, 1881

Overview

A morning walk, bright sun, and passion flowers gave the day a serene outward beauty, while Richard steadily pushed ahead with the score. The family wandered along his beloved Strada della Liberta, and the evening's reading of the third act of Henry IV Part II left them in speechless wonder and moral elevation. Even royal pageantry could not divert him from sharper criticism, as he fastened instead on the absurd ugliness of imperial uniform and ceremony.

Content

Tuesday, November 15:

R. goes for a walk before breakfast. Then he writes his score, and at midday we go out in very bright sunshine, and in a garden square are enchanted by the sight of a bush of passion flowers.

In the afternoon we stroll along R.’s favorite street, Strada di libertà; he works again on his score, and in the evening he reads to us the third act of Part II. After such things nothing remains to one except silence, wonder, and the uplifting feeling of becoming a better person.

Before that, R. showed me the I. Zeitung with two pictures from the world of royalty. He is particularly repelled by the uniform of the Austrian Emperor, shown proposing a toast to the Italian royal couple; he is offended by the shortness of the uniform, which does not even allow for cuffs and, when the sleeve is pushed back by the movement of raising a glass, reveals so much of the bare arm.
