Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of November 6, 1881

Overview

Sunshine and the first calm day in Palermo set an idyllic tone, beginning with the rescue of trapped birds and continuing through a drive to the Flora that charmed Richard. Evening moonlight on the terrace deepened their sense that Palermo might indeed become captivating. Even so, news about Lusch and Liszt introduced a countercurrent of concern that Richard answered with the wish to draw his father-in-law permanently into their household.

Sunday, November 6:

Quite a good night in spite of some deficiencies in the beds. The sun smiles upon us, and we smile back. Our first deed is to rescue birds, which are hunted with lures and cages smeared with birdlime. Drive to the Flora, which pleases R. greatly.

Spent a long time in the evening sitting on the terrace, in moonlight. The idyllic aspect of Palermo is beginning to captivate us. And R. in his contentment is infinitely kind toward me.

Melancholy news about Lusch and Father. R. intends to persuade my father to join us permanently.
