Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of September 17, 1881

Overview

Conversation circled around the decline and possible revival of the Blätter, and Richard made pointed remarks about the growing presence of Jewish actors in the theater and their treatment of the German language. He finished his article that day, heard hopeful news about royal financing of the orchestra through Friend Gross, described his current work as "very bold," and the evening ended quietly over whist.

Content

Saturday, September 17:

The Blätter and its demise and rebirth are still keeping us occupied; R. comes to the subject of Jews as actors, the fact that in ’53 he could write that there were none, whereas now...! And the way they treated our language!

Today he completes his article. Friend Gross, who has lunch with us, tells us about Herr v. Biirkel and says the latter now thinks that the King will after all finance the orchestra.

R. talks to me about his work, describes it as “very bold.” In the evening we play whist.
