Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 1, 1870

Overview

The previous evening’s music leaves Cosima sleepless and weakened, though she continues to drive the household’s educational routines. Frau Wille’s kind letter gives both her and Wagner pure pleasure in the goodness of a friend. Reports from Berlin suggest a powerful Meistersinger rehearsal without enough detail, while Richter helps with birthday serenade plans and the evening returns to Siegfried and Goetterdaemmerung.

Friday, April 1:

The music so affected me that I could not close my eyes for an instant. I feel extremely weak and “my mind” is only good for pulling the educational cart (R. told me about a Saxon peasant who once said to him: This dog has no mind, he will never pull a cart). In the morning a very nice letter from Frau Dr. Wille, to whom R. sent his pamphlet. She speaks about me in a kind and friendly manner. R. says: “Why are we so pleased? Is it because we have received some of this kindness, or because it is a revenge for us, or something of that sort? No, certainly not—it is just unalloyed pleasure in a friend who is good and worthy of respect.”

Letter from the theater manager in Magdeburg: he was present at the dress rehearsal of Die Meistersinger in Berlin, the King, the entire Court, and royal guests had been there, the impact profound. But we learn nothing about the performance. To town: Richter negotiates on my behalf concerning the serenade. In the evening 3rd act of Siegfried; yesterday Götterdämmerung (R. said he thought he had succeeded with Gutrune, she is a heathen child).
