Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of March 30, 1870

Overview

Cosima and Wagner continue weighing the proposed memorandum, with Cosima set to explain to Mendes why Wagner will not write it. Wagner works and plays her the deeply moving passage in which Siegfried forgets Bruennhilde, giving the day its strongest artistic center. Children’s dancing lessons, a playful gift of chocolate, and Herbeck’s defensive letter about Vienna fill the rest of the entry.

Content

Wednesday, March 30:

In the morning talked again about the memorandum, I am to write to Mendès, explaining why R. is not going to write it. R. works and plays for me the wonderfully moving passage in which Siegfried loses his memory of Brünnhilde. After lunch took the children to their dancing lesson; R. visits us there and conjures up some chocolate!

Evening of talk. Long letter from Herbeck, saying that everything had to be done in Vienna as it was because the audience was “thus and thus”—in fact, foolish nonsense.
