Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 7, 1881

Overview

A slight cooling of the oppressive heat lifts the mood, and Richard takes his morning walk in good spirits despite financial anxieties — a debt of 5,000 marks weighing on the household. Cosima settles on Nürnberg rather than Weimar for her meeting with Hans, choosing a location she can reach and return from in a single day, and Richard accepts the plan. The evening is spent in pleasant conversation about India, inspired by their current reading of Jacolliot.

Thursday, July 7:

The hot weather has cooled down somewhat. R. takes his promenade in cheerful spirits, though he has much to preoccupy him, for instance, expenditure greater than income, which means we have a debt of 5,000 marks. Lunch with our dear friend and her departure, after R. has made jokes about the way women can chat together. Letter from Lusch, who tells me that Weimar would suit her father for our meeting; however, I decide on Nürnberg, since I can travel there and back in a single day, and R. is content with that. In the evening conversation on India, brought about by Jacolliot’s book.
