Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of July 2, 1881

Overview

The day opens in cheerful, communal spirits with a breakfast outing in the palace gardens before Richter's departure, and Levi unexpectedly returns, his composure restored by Wagner's warm reply. At a lively lunch, Wagner calls for Hebrew wine and regales the table with tales of elephants from Jacolliot's book. The evening turns philosophical and personal as Wagner suggests to Levi, with some directness, that he has contemplated having him baptized and accompanying him to Holy Communion.

Content

Saturday, July 2:

A good night for R.; a fine morning. He goes for a walk in the palace gardens with the children, and we go with the Richters to meet him; all of us have breakfast in the upper pavilion in cheerful spirits. Richter's departure. At 1 o'clock, our poor friend Levi returns, thanks to R.'s splendid reply to his letter. At lunch there is a very relaxed, indeed even very cheerful mood. R. calls for Hebrew wine!

He tells us a lot about the elephants in Jacolliot's book, and Richter contributes much to the conversation. In the afternoon I write to Lusch, telling her my reasons for agreeing to a meeting, and I inform R. of it.

In the evening R. relates many things from his life, the rehearsals for Kienzl, something he says never happened to him before or since. When friend Levi tells us that he visited the cathedral in Bamberg and shows evidence of a leaning toward Catholicism, R. talks about the ceremonies in our church and praises their simplicity and feeling. He indicates to Levi that he has been thinking of having him baptized and of accompanying him to Holy Communion.
