Overview

Despite suffering from a painful gum abscess, Cosima pushes through the day to receive conductor Hans Richter, whose ebullient storytelling and good humor animate the lunch table. For Cosima, reminiscing about the happy Tribschen years proves the most poignant moment of the day.

Toothache for me; the doctor diagnoses an abscess on the gum. I would like to stay in bed, but there is Hans Richter with all his sunny good humor to receive, and poor friend Levi, who cannot recover his composure, to take leave of.

Lunch is much enlivened by Richter's countless anecdotes. He also talks about the unparalleled success of the new Venusberg music in London. He is confident about the theatrical venture. Memories of Tribschen, the happiest of all!

For me, poor Frau Jager in the evening! R. sends a telegram to friend Levi.

Life, and people who expect something from it!
