Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 22, 1881

Overview

The Wolzogens join for lunch on a day of oppressive heat, and the household mostly stays indoors, though Richard and Cosima slip away to the summerhouse for a quiet supper alone as a thunderstorm gathers. The children return from a long ramble in high spirits just as the storm arrives, while Richard and Cosima remain in a more contemplative mood. Before retiring, Richard's spirits lift as he watches the puppies venturing out of their box — a small, cheerful note on a day when he did not work.

Wednesday, June 22:

R. had a good night, he continues with his spa cure. At lunch our friends the Wolz.'s; Hans finds beneath his plate instructions, in verse, to go to Stockholm with his wife. Great heat, we stay at home, but around 7 we go to the summerhouse, R. and I, and eat our supper alone. The children are again out on a very long ramble. A thunderstorm approaches, they return home, very cheerful. We, R. and I, contemplative.

Before we went upstairs, R. amused himself greatly with the little puppies, who are now crawling out of their box. R. did not work.
