Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of June 15, 1881

Overview

Cosima accompanies Lusch each morning to Joukowsky's studio for a portrait sitting, a gift Lusch intends to bring to her father in Weimar. Richard works steadily on his score, and in the afternoon they enjoy the treetop pavilion while a peculiar letter from Dr. Schemann prompts reflection on the dynamics between a master and his disciples. A purported Mozart letter catches Richard's skeptical eye, and the conversation turns tenderly to Lusch's state of mind ahead of her impending reunion with Hans.

Wednesday, June 15:

Each morning now I have a sitting at friend Jouk.'s with Lusch, since she dearly wishes to take a picture of herself to Weimar for her father. R. works on his score. When Alexandersbad is mentioned, he says he would prefer Hyderabad, if that by any chance were also a Bad [spa].

In the afternoon we are in the pavilion, delighting in our life among the treetops. A very curious letter from Dr. Schemann gives me food for thought about the relationship between master and disciples. A newspaper from Berlin has published a nice article about our friend K. Eckert, also a letter by Mozart which R. declares to be not genuine, or rather a compilation. We talk about Lusch and Hans, and I tell R. that in her excitement, which takes forms I am not always happy about, there lies perhaps a providential aid, as it were, against the impressions she will now be exposed to.
