Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 21, 1881

Overview

Wagner takes some time to recover emotionally from the previous evening's political argument, and Cosima is warmly praised for her steadiness and good sense. A stream of correspondence arrives — Seitz's final withdrawal, a contract from Herr Francke, a friendly letter from Count Gobineau, and unwelcome legal demands from a Würzburg lawyer — while Wagner continues writing his score. The evening ends on a light note with a cheerful game of whist.

Content

Thursday, April 21:

It took R. a long time to recover from his agitation. He praises my good sense when I also have feelings on the subject. Many letters: Herr Seitz has definitely withdrawn; Herr Francke sends the contract. Count Gobineau writes in very friendly fashion; the lawyer in Würzburg makes demands. R. writes his score. In the evening we have a merry game of whist.
