Cosima's Diaries

Diary Entry of April 16, 1881

Overview

Wagner is tired and unwell, and the day passes quietly with a tolerable midday gathering and an evening of whist, offering little stimulation beyond a spring walk and the arrival of a new acquaintance, Herr Kohler, whose rough manner leaves his welcome uncertain. The entry has a subdued, recuperative quality, with Cosima noting Siegfried's lingering hoarseness as a small domestic detail amid the general quietude.

Content

Saturday, April 16:

R. does not feel well; he is tired and wants to see no more people in the evening. At lunch we have the Wolz.’s and Dr. Schemann, and it proves quite bearable. After lunch R. and I go for a walk - spring is here. All kinds of things for me, including the newly arrived Herr Kohler, a wild sort of creature. Can he be tamed? In the evening whist. (Siegfried still hoarse.)
